Stair rail glossary
Baluster: The vertical
stair parts arranged every few inches apart, They are the main parts on the railing. Baluster can be wood or metal and come
in numerous styles.
Newel post: The post used to start the railing and used at the corners. It is the main support
for the railing.
Box newel: A newel post that is square and is typically wider than a regular post.
Stair
bracket: metal bracket that holds the railing a few inches away from the wall.
Rosette: A square or oval piece
of wood that is attached to the wall and the railing terminates into it.
Gooseneck: a stair rail fitting that is
curved up, allowing the railing to transition to a higher point.
Shoe rail: A piece of wood on the floor that the
balusters fit into.
Tread: a wood step.
Riser: the vertical wood pieces between the treads.
End cap: a wood tread cap that only covers the last 6 inches of the stairs treads and risers. This is used on carpeted stairs
to give the stairs the look of wood stairs with a carpet runner.
Skirt board: a board running down the side of
the stairs attached to the wall.
